The Region - Torres Vedras District - Parish of Silveira

The Parish of Silveira

The Santa Cruz beach is situated in two of the twenty parishes that compose the council of Torres Vedras: Parish of Silveira and Parish of A-dos-Cunhados.

Silveira, a parish that is relatively modern, was disunited from the parish of S. Pedro da Cadeira to remain in this condition on the 1st of October 1926. Occupying a vast area of 24,9km2, it is situated between the green rural pastures and the blue-green shades of the Atlantic. It has on its borders that parishes of S. Pedro da Cadeira to the south, Ponte do Rol to the east and A-dos-Cunhados in the north with the Atlantic Ocean to the West. The head office of the parish is about 12kms from the town of Torres Vedras, 4kms from the Santa Cruz beach and 1km from the Sizandro river bank.

The parish of Silveira has a significant amount of small holdings spread throughout the whole parish, accentuated by its rurality they are the following localities:

  • Casalinhos de Alfaiata
  • Cerca
  • Santa Cruz
  • Secarias
  • Silveira
  • Praia Azul

Visiting the Parish of Silveira

The most well known place of this parish, and your visiting card, is the Santa Cruz beach. Through passing times designated by Santa Cruz de Ribamar, stands out from other beaches due to its expansion, width and white sands, and also the ever imposing and grand Penedo do Guincho that has withstood for many decades the impetuous rage of the sea. The following beaches are part of this parish:

  • Praia Formosa (Santa Cruz)
  • Praia do Sul (Santa Cruz)
  • Praia do Guincho (Santa Cruz)

  • Praia de Santa Helena (Santa Cruz)
  • Praia do Centro (Santa Cruz)

The whole patrimony consists of: Azenha de Santa Cruz, the chapel of Santa Helena in Santa Cruz, the church of Santa Cruz, the church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo in Silveira, the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in front of Casal de Valverde and the Moinho de Caixeiros (windmill).

Other areas of interest are the Aerodromo Municipal de Santa Cruz (Municipal Airstrip), the viewing points of Santa Helena and Alto da Vela, the touristic forest of Casalinhos de Alfaiata and numerous beaches at your disposal.

The most popular and main festivities are related with the traditional summer carnival and the Ethnography Parade of the 15th of August both in Santa Cruz, and the many popular festivals celebrated throughout the whole parish that takes place during the summer season.

Economic Activities
Agriculture, open field and greenhouse farming, construction, commerce and industry.
Activity Sectors
The more developed activity sector is the industry, increased by numerous housing construction projects and small business companies. The other sector is agriculture. Silveira and A-dos-Cunhados are the parishes in the council of Torres Vedras that represent more than 50% in the production of horticultural produce. And the third sector is mainly in the area of commerce, registering a high level of development, with more focus in Santa Cruz.
