Barcelona Art Culture and Tapas

Barcelona is Spain's second city and the capital of Catalonia in the north of the country. The city is a vibrant metropolis with a great artistic and architectural heritage. Many of the buildings are art nouveau with many being designed by the avant-garde and occasionally bizarre architect Gaudi, of whom his professor, at his graduation said “I don’t know weather we are graduating a genius or a fool!”

It is a well laid out city with broad streets and wide walkways. The city transport and tourist infrastructure underwent a massive program of improvement and modernization from 1987 to 1992 in preparation for staging the Olympic games, and today that legacy still ensures good quality, plentiful accommodation and good transport links.

The people here seem to have a passion for all things artistic and as such you will find many street artists and performers and, as well as a profusion of the more usual galleries, concert halls, museums and exhibitions. The nightlife is also good. Barcelona is definitely a party city and the streets are generally safe at night although all the usual precautions are still advisable.

Lets Travel to Rome

We haven't met... yet, and until now you wouldn't know that I make part of my living by writing about the city of Rome, roman life, its people, passions, food, sport, history and culture. In fact, I own a web site called Lets-Travel-Rome.com, which kinda happened by happy accident after I visited this great city with my Wife - one anniversary, some time ago.

If you've ever had the opportunity to travel to Rome, you'll probably already know about the fervour and passion of its
people, who can get themselves into a convincing frenzy over
virtually anything that happens in daily life.

I had the chance to be in the city during the 2004 European
Football Championships, at a time when the national team were heavily dependant on the form and talent of one Francesco Totti, Rome's favorite footballing son, whose image cannot be avoided wherever you look!

Here is a God-Like figure, who Romans pin their hearts and hopes upon, every time he appears for the "Azzuri" (the national squad) or their beloved Roma (the capitals leading team for many years). It's almost impossible to purchase a Roma team shirt without the "Totti" name emblazoned on its back, and his power over advertising media can clearly be appreciated by the range of products he is able to endorse succesfully around the cities poster sites.

You can probably imagine the atmosphere found in the streets during these crucial championship matches. The whole place draped with flags and banners, windows thrown open, filling the roads with the sounds of urgent cheering and disappointed groans.

Suddenly, we were taken by surprise, and Italy had scored a goal! A massive uprising was taking place all around us, and the waiter at our streetside cafe was off... running in triumphant circles around the middle of the road. Cars were hooting, people were leaning out of their windows to cheer and share in the chaos, and normal life was suspended for several minutes whilst the Romans celebrated their modern day gladiators success.

About half an hour later we became aware of an eary silence, and the unthinkable had happened without our realisation. The opposing team had scored an equalising goal, putting Italy out of the final stages of the competition, and a grave period of mourning was about to begin. Our waiter leaned listlessly against the side wall of our cafe, all interest in activity drained from his body... best get the bill and get out of here, we thought.

The next days papers carried furious reviews of the nights failings, and we couldn't find anyone who wanted to discuss their dashed pride with mere tourists like us. Mr Totti stilled smiled down on us, as we continued to stroll around the deflated city, but we suspected his "pulling power" was sharply dimished that day.

But, this was Rome, and before our break was spent, the old passions were rising to the surface once more. Roma were to open the new season with a derby match against the Old Enemy, Lazio, and the rivalry between the two sets of fans is intense. The two teams share the Stadio Olimpico, which has a capacity of 100,000 screaming fans... the modern version of The Coloseum, or The Circus Maximus, we thought!

That's all for now. In my next article, I'll explain more of my travel tips for your time in Rome

Best wishes for a great vacation,

Les Sheppard

 Perth Scotland

Perthshire is situated centrally in Scotland being about one hours drive from both of the major cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. There are good road and rail links, an airport in Edinburgh and an international airport in Glasgow.
Perthshire is a beautiful scenic area and has been a popular tourist area in the past especially with people who like the outdoors and activities such as walking and cycling. The world spotlight fell upon the area recently when Gleneagles played host to the G8 Summit.
Perthshire was once voted best place to live and has attracted the attention of a few who have considered relocating to the area or thought of moving their business or setting up new businesses here.
If you are thinking of relocating to Perthshire it is important to consider carefully all the facts before making such an important decision that will affect both you and your family.
It is important to note that Perthshire is a rural area and the economy still very much revolves around farming, land and tourism. Although Perth itself is often referred to as the "Fair City" it is in fact a town and has never been granted city status which means that the area does not attract major funding for economic development. The average earnings in Perthshire are acknowledged by Perth and Kinross Council as being lower than the rest of Tayside and Scotland.
In terms of school education which should be a key factor in the decision making process, the council also report that most exam results in secondary schools were said to be below the average for similar authorities in 2004.
Perthshire is really akin to a market town and the business community are very close knit which makes it very difficult for new businesses coming to the area to make a go of it. Major new business developments have been prevented from establishing themselves in Perthshire and have gone elsewhere to places such as Dundee who recognise the importance of bringing in new talent and new businesses to their city.
We hope to give an unbiased view of what it's really like to live and work in Perthshire as an outsider and to help you make the right decision if you are deciding to relocate.

Perth Scotland is the home of Business Perthshire, an information packed website of articles gathered and collated from the media designed to assist all quality businesses in Perth and offer useful tourism information for the visitor.
